The new 'Social Value and Well-Being' Act is used by government and local authority bodies to assess the social value and well-being impact of businesses. Since January 2021, a minimum of 10% weighting has already been placed on social value and well-being for any business bidding for any central government or local authority contracts. The United Kingdom government has committed with other United Nations’ countries to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all, by achieving all the social value and well-being goals by 2030. Social. Environmental. Economic. SEE the shape of the new world.
Many organisations and local authorities publish specific social value agendas, usually in the form of strategic economic or social plans, for example, the Northeast LEP Strategic Economic Plan. Manchester currently applies a 20% weighting, with Brighton applying 30%. By 2028, the government will make all businesses responsible for demonstrating what social value and well-being systems have been put into place in their business. In a more esoteric essence, how are we all trying to be better citizens of our planet?
The demand for businesses to deliver positive social, well-being, economic and environmental impact grows year on year. The "Social Value and Well-being" concept has been highlighted by the Government and local authorities commitment to spend 33% of its procurement budget from 2025, only with businesses who are "Social Values Ready". This is accompanied by their continuing wider ambition to support the ethical development of "Social Value and Well-Being" policies within all British businesses employing more than 20 people, to empower them compete at a national and global level.
Most businesses will find themselves falling short of the 'Social Values and Well-Being' criteria and unsure how to proceed. However, this is a great opportunity for forward looking businesses to secure their future in an ethical and people-focussed way, including new standards for integrating well-being into businesses, with specific metrics to measure the impact on their people.
